The Liberal Democrats have published figures showing police paperwork takes up more than 56 million hours a year. Also today, the Chief Inspector of Constabulary, Sir Ronnie Flanagan, has criticised excessive bureaucracy for hindering police in their work. In an interim report, Sir Ronnie said forces would "over-record and under-deliver" for fear of missing something or being criticised. He said bureaucracy must be cut to free up police time. Welsh Liberal Democrat Councillor for Uplands Claire Waller, who is also a member of the South Wales Police Authority said:
"This government has utterly failed to stop the tidal wave of bureaucracy which has hit police officers in the last few years."
"Instead of pouring vast amounts of taxpayers' money into unnecessary ID cards, Labour should put its money where its mouth is and invest in both more police officers, and more community support officers."
"In addition, there must be more mobile IT technology so that officers are out on the streets and not chained to their desks."
