Welsh Liberal Democrat Leader of Swansea Council Chris Holley has hammered the new Assembly Labour and Plaid coalition over their agreement to allow dredging of sand from the Helwick Bank for the next seven years. Councillor Holley said:-
"This decision is nothing short of vandalism. Labour, and their Plaid helpers, have agreed to allow 150,000 tonnes of sand to be dredged from the Helwick each and every year for the next seven years, despite the clear evidence of sand loss from beaches like Horton and Port Eynon.
"Gower depends upon its reputation as an AONB to attract tourism. It is clear that the Lab/Plaid Government thinks very little of the area."
"Dredging from the Helwick is like underwater opencast mining and just because we can't see the damage doesn't mean it isn't happening. After all, the Helwick is only four kilometres from our beaches at its farthest point.
"I understand the need to have building materials available, but the answer is to increase the use of recycled waste as aggregate, which has traditionally been lower in Wales than in other parts of the UK, rather than to threaten the tourism industry on Gower.
"Labour and Plaid should be ashamed of themselves."
