Office of Fair Trading investigation into house building sector must include Wales says AM

June 26, 2007 12:48 PM

Peter Council HousingThe Welsh Liberal Democrat spokesperson on Housing, Peter Black, has welcomed the announcement by the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) that it is to launch an investigation into the house building industry in the UK.

The investigation will examine how regulation and competition might work more effectively, and will examine customer satisfaction and planning issues. The UK house building sector is worth £20bn a year, and the OFT study is expected to be completed by mid-2008.

"Labour's policies over the last ten years have created the current housing crisis " said Mr.Black. Any complete investigation of the UK housing market must examine Labour's policies here in Wales, or lack of them, on providing more affordable homes.

"I welcome the OFT's consideration of building regulations and how they are enforced, but it is vital that they also include the effects of land banks and option agreements.

"Wales needs to exert full control over its own planning and building regulations so that we can best temper them to our housing needs. That is why the Welsh Liberal Democrats are calling on the Assembly Government to use their new powers on planning matters to the maximum"
