Peter Black and Helen Ceri Clarke at Morriston Hospital
The Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member for South Wales West, Peter Black, has accused a Plaid Cymru Assembly candidate of lying in his election literature so as to try to gain political advantage from the Morriston Neurosurgery issue.
Mr. Black was referring to a leaflet being circulated around the Swansea East constituency by Plaid candidate, Danny Bowles, in which he makes the claim that "When Plaid proposed a motion in the Assembly to keep the (neurosurgery) unit in Swansea, all members of the other parties voted against it". In fact all the local representatives from Plaid, Labour, Conservative and Welsh Liberal Democrats supported this motion and many spoke in favour of retaining neurosurgery at Morriston hospital.
"I find it very sad that Plaid Cymru feel that they are able to misrepresent the facts in this case so as to secure political gain," said Mr. Black. "It is bad enough that they have been trying to hijack a genuine cross-party campaign without them now lying in their election literature about how I and other AMs voted in the Assembly debate. I personally am committed to the campaign to keep neurosurgery in Swansea and I will not let any other consideration get in the way of that commitment."
"My concern about Plaid Cymru's campaign is that they are turning the neurosurgery issue into a party political matter and that as such they will polarise views on it at a time when we need to persuade people elsewhere in Wales of the merits of our case. We must not let petty party politics get in the way of what is in the best interests of our local area."
