Local Conservatives challenged over top Tory press release

April 4, 2007 11:38 PM

Welsh Liberal Democrat candidate for Gower and Swansea councillor Nick Tregoning has challenged local Tories over Tory Chancellor George Osborne referring to the Common Agricultural Policy as 'an unreformed EU programme' in a press release.

Commenting, Nick Tregoning said:

"You've got to admire Mr. Osborne's effrontery. Like other politicians of his ilk, both local and national, he appears to believe that all he has to do is say something and it is automatically true. What typical Tory arrogance."

"The CAP has been reformed beyond all recognition with a final break between subsidies and production so that farmers increasingly decide on what to produce according to the market, not government diktat,

"The CAP reforms ensure that farms no longer get more subsidies for more production, but instead get money based on their historic payments and environmental stewardship. As a result they decide on what to produce according to the market price.

"Moreover the farm budget has fallen from more than three quarters of the EU budget in the seventies to less than half now,

"If this is 'unreformed' Mr. Osborne is living in a dream world of Europhobic nonsense detached from reality; and if local Conservatives actually agree with this rubbish, they should at least have the guts to say so."
