Rhodri Morgan and Peter Hain, in opening their campaign for the Welsh general election, have claimed that the only alternative to giving New Labour an overall majority is to put a Conservative into power in Cardiff Bay.
Frank Little, local LibDem candidate, said: "Nobody nowadays is going to be taken in by this hoary old scare story. People only have to glance at the Welsh Liberal Democrat manifesto to see how far removed our party is from the Conservatism of Nick Bourne or David Davies. It follows that Welsh citizens can safely double their vote for LibDems (one in their constituency, one on the list), in the knowledge that LibDem Assembly Members will not form, or support, an administration which puts Tory ideas into practice."
He added: "What Labour is after is the sort of secure majority enjoyed by Tony Blair in Westminster, and, before him, by Margaret Thatcher. We should all remember what that unchecked power led to: the poll tax, the council tax and an illegal war in Iraq. We must not allow an elected dictatorship in Wales."
