The Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member for South Wales West, Peter Black, has urged management at Visteon to reconsider the decision to stop brake disc production at their Swansea plant.
Visteon have announced that they are to axe this area of their work, with the loss of around 175 jobs. They have said that most of these jobs will go through the release of temporary workers and voluntary redundancies, however Mr. Black is concerned that the decision could herald a general running down of the plant's operations leading to its eventual closure.
"What appears to have prompted this announcement is the decision by Ford to shut down their Leamington Spa plant, which produces the raw materials from which the brake discs are made," said Mr. Black. "However, there is no indication that Visteon no longer has a market for these brake discs. Indeed, if they are able to source the raw materials elsewhere then they may well be able to make the line more profitable."
"My concern is that Visteon are no longer committed to their Swansea plant. I am aware that they are seeking to sell it if they can but so far they have had little success in this venture. I urge them to sit down with the Trade Unions and work out how best to preserve operations here. If they can save any of those 175 jobs then it will have been worthwhile."
