Welsh Liberal Democrat candidate for Aberavon Councillor Claire Waller today attacked the Tories for voting against proposals that aim to crack down on unscrupulous landlords.
Tories in Westminster have voted against the Tenancy Deposit Scheme, which will introduce safeguards to protect deposits given by tenants. The vote passed despite Tory opposition. Councillor Waller said,
"I am delighted that three years after Liberal Democrat MPs began the fight for a Tenancy Deposit Scheme to be included in the Housing Act, it is at last going to come into effect on the 6th April."
"During the intervening years much work has been done on the schemes and all foreseeable problems have been ironed out, with agreement from all parties."
"This scheme will help to raise the profile and reputation of the private rented sector in general. Here in Aberavon, people have suffered financial loss because of the actions of a few rogue landlords. It is utterly irresponsible of the Tories to vote against measures that will bring security to landlords and tenants alike. Local Tories must stand up to their friends in Westminster, and demand that they change their minds."
