Welsh Assembly Government delays in processing a compulsory purchase order is delaying the replacement of Pen-y-fai Church in Wales Primary School in Bridgend and threatening its scheduled opening date of January 2009, according to a local Assembly Member.
Work on the new school cannot start until the compulsory purchase order has been processed. Despite the fact that the public enquiry was held in September 2006, the Minister has still not made a decision as to whether it can go ahead or not. If a decision is not made by 30 March then rules preventing announcements during the Assembly election period means that it will be delayed until after 4 May.
"I have visited Pen-y-fai school and can honestly say that the conditions in which pupils and teachers have to work are amongst some of the worst in Wales," said Mr. Black. "The buildings are in an appalling state and it is vital that the long promised replacement school is started as soon as possible. If the Minister does not make a decision soon then there may well be a serious delay to its scheduled opening date."
"As a result of representations I have received from Bridgend Council I am writing to the Minister urging her to make a swift decision. This affair cannot be allowed to drag on any longer."
