Sketty Liberal Democrat Councillor, Mike Day, has criticized Labour's attack on the state of school buildings in Swansea.
Mike Day, who is also Swansea's Cabinet Member for Education said, ' Labour must tell people the truth when talking about the state of school buildings in Swansea. The current Administration are spending £10.5 million on Swansea schools in the coming year.
Parents, pupils and teachers know that we are seeking to address a backlog of repairs as a result of under-funding over many years by the previous Labour administration. How much did they spend on our schools and was it spent wisely?
We have initiated surveys to discover the extent of the legacy that Labour has left, and we are dismayed with what we have been finding. And it's not just schools - the Leisure centre and Guildhall are just other examples of how maintenance was ignored by the Labour.'
'While setting out grand plans to make schools fit for purpose by 2010, the Labour controlled WAG has not made the resources available. In fact, WAG has actually cut our capital grant for schools!
'Despite this, we have started making in-roads into the backlog and have allocated an additional £850,000 to address some of the most serious problems in addition to the planned capital programme.
'At least we agree that having a proper learning environment is essential and we are committed to doing what we can to improve our school buildings. Are Labour prepared to say the same and put their money where their mouth is?'
