The Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member for South Wales West, Peter Black, has written to the Health Minister to ask him to intervene in ensuring that important government funding continues to go to Swansea Mind.
Swansea Mind is a charity committed to supporting people with mental health problems. They are concerned that they could lose out on funding from the Local Mental Health Grants Scheme and the Scheme for People with Disabilities.due to a review of how funding is distributed to voluntary organisations. The charity, which has been in existence since 1963, works with those with mental health problems. It runs a drop in centre, a befriending group, weekly psychotherapy sessions as well as giving information through phone and email.
"Swansea Mind provides vital services for people with mental health difficulties, their carers and their families," said Mr. Black. "When they contacted me they included letters from those that they have helped and they make a major impact in improving the quality of life for those they help. We cannot afford to lose even part of that service."
"I have written to the Health Minister in support of this charity and asked him to confirm that they will still receive the same amount of financial support after the review. I have also asked him to undertake a full impact assessment on any changes made. The work of Mind and organisations like it is so important to our communities and the Government cannot allow their funding to be threatened."
