The Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member for South Wales West, Peter Black, has questioned the priorities of the Child Support Agency, after they paid out £25 million in bonuses to their staff, whilst still having failed to collect £3.5 billion in unpaid maintenance.
The amount of bonuses was revealed in questions posed by Liberal Democrats in Westminster. They found that £25 million has been paid in bonuses to CSA employees since 2001.
Commenting, Welsh Liberal Democrat AM for South Wales West Peter Black said:
"I am sure that staff are doing their best to cope with an inadequate system and have earned these bonuses, however that is little comfort to those single parents who are still waiting for vital maintenance money. Our research has revealed that the highest proportion of unsettled claims is in Wales, where 1.29% of the entire adult population are owed money. Almost 25,800 Welsh families are being forced to live without money that is rightfully theirs. That is over 1,309 families in Neath and Port Talbot alone."
"The CSA is in need of fundamental reform, but all we see from the Government is delay after delay. That this issue has not been addressed is a slap in the face for the tens of thousands of families living in poverty due to its incompetence. The CSA's responsibilities should be passed over to the Treasury who are in a far better position to ensure child support is collected. The DWP must not write off any of the debt owed to lone parents."
