Peter Black and Nick Tregoning at Fairwood Hospital
A pledge by the Welsh Liberal Democrats that if they were in government hospital services will not be re-organised without first setting out the alternative community provision to replace them would directly benefit Swansea, the Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member for South Wales West, Peter Black, has said.
The promise is contained in a Welsh Liberal Democrat policy document entitled "Healthcare when you need it" which was launched today. The party is putting the focus on extending and improving access to health services in the community to put the patient first. The document also pulls together Welsh Liberal Democrat policies for a modern ambulance service, more responsive accident & emergency services and improved community healthcare. It sets out policy for the remainder of the Assembly and beyond.
"In Swansea the local health board is actively pursuing the closure of vital facilities such as Fairwood Hospital and ward one at Hill House without putting appropriate alternative care in place," said Mr. Black. "That would not be allowed to happen under this policy. We are arguing that any hospital re-organisation should include plans for alternative provision being in place, having listened to patients. We also need to see shared budgets between the NHS and Social Services to deal with bed-blocking."
"Part of this agenda means the introduction of health hubs that are one-stop shops for healthcare and well-being services and targeted health MOTs to check up on people before they are ill, preventing more radical treatment at a later stage. But it also means that health administrators are not able to trample over the wishes of local people without ensuring that their needs are being met in some other way. That can only be good for the health service and for democracy."
