The Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member for South Wales West, Peter Black, has called on local AM and Welsh Enterprise Minister, Andrew Davies, to ensure that Swansea does much better in the final round of European funding.
Mr. Black was speaking after it was revealed that, despite having significant pockets of deprivation, the City trailed some way behind other less deprived areas in the amount of money it received in the first round of Objective One funding. Gwynedd in North Wales got nearly twice the amount per head than Swansea, with a per capita investment of £613. Anglesey received £560 per head, Blaenau Gwent £522, Neath Port Talbot £510 and Merthyr Tydfil £415. By comparison, Swansea received £363 per head from Europe.
"This uneven distribution of funds is very worrying and raises significant questions about how the money was allocated," said Mr. Black. "Swansea has some of the most deprived areas in Wales, and needs substantial infrastructure investment if we are to put that situation right in a reasonable period of time."
"It is vital that the Economic Development Minister ensures that his home City does not lose out in the final funding round from Europe.."
