The Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member for South Wales West, Peter Black, has expressed his regret at the decision of Swansea NHS Trust to discontinue its service to chronic pain sufferers in the City.

Mr. Black was speaking after Swansea Local Health Board confirmed that the service is to end due to a lack of funding. They are now carrying out a review of pain services in conjunction with other LHBs in Mid and West Wales but there is no prospect of pain relief for patients before that review is concluded.

"This is a very dark day for patients in the Swansea area, many of whom need this service to relieve chronic pain," said Mr. Black. "A review is neither comfort nor help to these people and will leave them with little or no help for their condition. I have already been approached by patients who are concerned at the ending of this service, which appears to have become a victim of the Trust's financial problems."

"It is vital that the Assembly Health Minister steps in to address this issue and provide more funding for it. The absence of a Wales wide pain relief service is a major gap in health provision and needs to be addressed urgently."
