Nick Tregoning and Peter Black outside a local school
Dunvant's Welsh Liberal Democrat Councillors John Newbury and Nick Tregoning are to propose a motion on mobile phone masts to Swansea Council.
They are urging that the Council shows its support for a tightening of the planning regulations for the siting of mobile phone masts that has been put forward by Andrew Stunell MP, and further urges the Welsh Assembly Government to use its new powers to introduce tighter regulation here in Wales whatever may happen in Westminster.
"We have taken this step after our experience with the siting of masts in Dunvant," said John Newbury. "Like many other communities in Swansea and throughout Wales, we have seen mobile phone companies refused planning permission by the Council, and then overturning these decisions upon appeal to the Planning Inspectorate. The planning regulations to protect communities are simply not strong enough."
"We are hoping that all councillors will support this motion," added Nick Tregoning, who is also the Welsh Lib Dem Assembly candidate for Gower. "The last Conservative government allowed the mobile phone companies these special privileges in much the same way as they allowed the cable companies to dig up all our pavements. We want to see a situation where those people affected in communities like Dunvant are properly consulted, and where the precautionary principle is applied to sites near homes, schools, and medical facilities. If Labour in Westminster won't listen, then the Assembly must act using its new powers. We are also calling for a policy review of any masts on Council land to make sure we have our own house in order."
