The Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member for South Wales West, Peter Black, has called on the Welsh Assembly Government to follow the lead set in England through the introduction of a 'sanctuary scheme' for victims of domestic abuse.
The UK Government is to provide £74m to provide domestic abuse victims with a safe room within their own home in which they can take refuge from an abuser and from which they can contact police. Such a facility would only be provided at the request of the victim and where the perpetrator no longer lived in the home. The intention is to give the victim the confidence to remain in their home rather than being forced to flee to a refuge.
"This is an excellent idea, as it will allow many more abused women to be safe in their own homes," said Mr. Black. "I would urge the Labour Assembly Government to follow England's lead and establish a similar scheme here in Wales. However, leaving it at that will not be enough. The Government must also put more funding into refuges so that women who are forced to flee have somewhere safe to escape to. There are far too few women's refuges in Wales."
"One in four women will be the victim of domestic violence during their lifetime. This is a blight on the reputation of a civilised nation, and self-evidently, far more needs to be done to tackle the root causes of abuse."
