The Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member for South Wales West, Peter Black has called for minimum standards for the supply of green energy by power companies.
Mr Black was responding to the recent report from the National Consumer Council and Energywatch which has revealed that many of the so-called 'green' tariffs offered by our power suppliers do not live up to the claims that are made for them.
"UK energy suppliers have got to put this right and quickly," said Mr Black. "The NCC/Energywatch report makes it plain that none of the energy suppliers say that consumers are already contributing to green energy through a £7.00 per household levy. Nor do they make it clear that even the best tariffs will only cut the carbon emissions of the average household by 6% per year."
"There is a huge danger with all this. Many people want to do their bit to switch to greener energy, yet only around 1% of UK households have done so as yet. However, the NCC report says that some 64% of us are considering it. Rather than launching confusing tariffs and making inflated environmentally friendly claims for them, the energy companies should be transparent with what they offer; so that those of us who want to cut our carbon footprint have the information that enables us to make a proper choice about who we buy our energy from."
"We need an independent set of standards that the energy companies must meet before they can describe their tariffs as being green. If they will not come up with one voluntarily, then government must step in rapidly and do it for them. There is no time to lose."
