Labour's Post Office cuts 'will decimate local communities' says AM

The Welsh Liberal Democrat member for South Wales West Peter Black AM has attacked Labour's plans for slashing the Post Office network. Mr Black is visiting post offices in the region in order to gauge for himself the impact of Labour's plans to slash 2500 post offices throughout the UK, many of them in rural areas.
One of the post offices visited by Mr Black is in Pontycymer, where he was speaking to local postmaster 'Dixie' Dean about the likely impact of the proposals upon local people and local businesses.
"It was good to visit Pontycymer Post Office; see for myself how embedded they are in their local community, and hear at first hand about the vital services that they provide," said Mr Black.
"It's all very well for Labour's Alistair Darling to bang on about cutting 'uneconomic' post offices, but we all remember the cynical way that Labour has acted over the last few years to help bring that about. Scrapping the pension book; trying to bully those on benefits to take out basic bank accounts; scrapping the present Post Office Current Account; removing passport checking; stopping TV licence stamps and so on. It appears Labour has decided that the only measure which really matters is money. Like the Conservatives before them, they know the price of everything and the value of nothing."
"Labour trumpets its new-found commitment to communities, and yet they turn their back upon post offices that are providing a much-needed service to individuals, local businesses, clubs, and voluntary organisations in those very communities," continued Mr Black. "It's clear that cutting post offices will decimate local communities. Whatever happened to joined-up thinking?"
