The Welsh Liberal Democrat Education Spokesperson for Education, Peter Black, has called on the Education Minister to do more to convince employers to invest in their workforce in conjunction with FE sector so as to drive up standards in Wales.
Recent reports have shown that the skills profile of Welsh workers has risen in the last decade, but even if the skills target set for 2020 is reached, the UK would slip to no more than 'average' in international rankings.
"The issue of improving skills for those in work is crucial to the growth of the Welsh economy," said Mr Black. "We cannot get the improvement we seek by concentrating on skills training for those of school age alone. Around 70% of those who will make up the Welsh workforce of 2020 are already in employment. That is why it is vital that the Welsh Assembly Government continues to make work-based learning a high priority when it comes to funding, and why the work of the FE sector in promoting best practice and higher standards in this area is to be applauded and encouraged."
"I shall be urging the Minister to be more proactive in her efforts to convince employers that it is their interest to release staff for training, and also to convince them that investment in training will pay off in economic terms. Work-based learning is the key to increasing prosperity in Wales"
