Assembly Member welcomes burns research funding

November 29, 2006 4:19 PM

The Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member for South Wales West, Peter Black, has welcomed the announcement that Cardiff University and Morriston Hospital have been jointly awarded £10 million over 20 years by the Healing Foundation UK Centre for Burns Research.

The Healing Foundation is a UK charity researching disfiguring conditions. The centre will provide an international focus for burns research, education, prevention and psychological understanding.

"This is a major investment in the City and will hopefully assist in keeping the burns unit at Morriston Hospital," said Mr. Black. "It is also a vindication of the decision to establish the medical school in Swansea. That decision has helped to attract some major investment to the city, including the new Institute of Life Sciences, which is currently under construction. Hopefully this is just the beginning of Wales becoming a world leader in a range of health sectors."
