Peter Black and Helen Ceri Clarke at a local Post Office
If the Government is serious about enabling low earners to acquire easy-to-access bank accounts then they need to maintain the Post Office Card Account and invest in maintaining the Post Office network, according to the Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member for South Wales West, Peter Black.
Mr Black was reacting to a report from the Treasury Select Committee calling for the basic bank accounts offered by the High Street banks to be made easier to access. Yet at the same time Government plans to abolish the Post Office Card Account could lead to many pensioners and low earners being excluded from banking services and the loss of thousands of Post Office branches.
"As worthy as the ambition of the Treasury Select Committee is the failure of the Government to value the contribution of Post Offices has left many people with no where to turn in their search for easy-to-access bank accounts," said Mr. Black. "Post Office Card Accounts can be accessed through an extensive network of branches in every community and yet Government plans to shut down this account will decimate that service."
"Welsh Liberal Democrats have been in the forefront of the fight to save the Post Office Card Account and to save the network of Post Office branches. Cuts in the services that they can provide will hit most those on low and fixed incomes. The Government need to take this into account when they respond to the Treasury Select Committee."
