Commenting on the announcement by Alcoa that it will close its Swansea factory by the end of March 2007 with the loss of 298 jobs, Peter Black, Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member for South Wales West said:
"I am saddened and disappointed at this terrible news. It will be a major blow for many families as they prepare for Christmas and will have a huge impact on the Swansea economy. We cannot afford to lose manufacturing jobs of this calibre in the City and I urge the Assembly Government to work with the Trade Unions in seeking to convince the company that they have a viable future here in an effort to change their minds."
"I have asked the Presiding Officer for an urgent question to the Enterprise Minister tomorrow (Wednesday) to ask for his assistance in persuading the company to stay in Swansea. In particular we need to know what discussions the Government have had with Alcoa prior to this announcement; whether there is any assistance that they can offer to change the company's mind as part of a rescue plan; and if not what can be done to mitigate these job losses through retraining packages and help in finding other jobs."
"The Minister needs to talk to the Trade Unions and to the Company without delay and do everything in his power to retain as many of these jobs in the City as possible."
