The Welsh Liberal Democrat Education Spokesperson, Peter Black has called on schools to organise themselves so as to take full benefit from the continuing professional development (CPD) completed by serving teachers.
Mr Black was reacting to findings announced at the recent General Teaching Council for Wales (GTCW) meeting at Treforest which show that only a quarter of schools evaluate the impact of teachers' CPD upon teaching and learning.
"it is vitally important that serving teachers have the opportunity for professional development, and heartening that over 50% of them share what they learn with departmental colleagues," said Mr Black. "However, what is needed in addition is for schools to make provision for the skills people are obtaining to be cascaded through the organisation, and from school to school."
"It is a fact that one-shot training leaches out over time, and unless schools and LEAs can organise themselves in such a way as to alter what they do in the light of the new ideas and ways of doing things that staff on CPD courses are bringing back, then the benefit will not be fully realised. All of this will cost money, of course, and it is for the Labour Assembly Government to ensure that schools and local authorities have the extra resources they need to take full advantage of the opportunities that CPD brings."
