The Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member for South Wales West, Peter Black, has praised the campaign by the South Wales Evening Post to prevent the relocation of adult neurosurgery from Morriston Hospital to Cardiff.
"The Evening Post deserves a great deal of credit for the way that they have taken this campaign up, and pushed it forward, said Mr Black. "They have mobilised local opinion, and the strength of the campaign is due in no small measure to their efforts. Local AMs and councillors from across the region have already made their views perfectly plain to Health Commission Wales,(HCW) and to Aberavon AM Brian Gibbons, who as Health Minister will have the final say, but when push come to shove, it will be the strength of the opposition from the public across the region that will weigh most heavily with the Labour Assembly Government in Cardiff."
"More and more people are coming to the conclusion that these proposals are simply designed to benefit Cardiff at Swansea's expense once again. Journey times will increase for seriously ill people across this region, and further west; Cardiff's arrangements for helicopter access are insufficient; and I am told by senior health professionals that the argument that children's' neurosurgery and adult neurosurgery need to be together is seriously flawed."
"The Evening Post campaign has already resulted in 50,000 signatures, but I would urge all those who care about this issue but have yet to sign a petition to do so. The more pressure we can apply to HCW and to the Health Minister the better."
