One in five people in Wales experience stress, anxiety, or depression, but are often reluctant to get professional help. The negative effect of this scourge is felt in families, among friends, and in the workplace.
South Wales West Liberal Democrat Assembly Member, Peter Black, has welcomed the launch of 'Healthy Minds at Work', which is seeking to do something about this issue by forging a unique partnership with employers and employees, and through timely intervention with sufferers themselves via a dedicated 24 hr confidential helpline.
"Because there are no obvious physical symptoms, stress, anxiety and depression can be hard to spot and hard to admit to - sometimes even by the sufferers to themselves," said Mr. Black. "Men in particular are notoriously bad at seeking timely help for physical ailments, and it is the same in the field of anxiety and stress. If left untreated, these ailments can cause family breakdown, loss of employment, and worse. Something like one in four men in Wales experience these problems, and far too many do not seek assistance."
"That is why I am delighted that Healthy Minds at Work have set up this 24 hr telephone line staffed by trained counsellors so that people who need this kind of intervention can get professional help rapidly. I would urge them to ring in and get help sooner rather than later. The number to ring is 0800 028 1514."
