The Welsh Liberal Democrat Education Spokesperson, Peter Black, has suggested that the Welsh Assembly should use its new powers to curb the marketing of unhealthy foods and products aimed at children and young people.
Mr. Black was speaking in the light of a warning by the Chief Medical Officer for England that life expectancy will fall as a result of poor diets and the failure of Government to combat the advertising of unhealthy products with their own campaigns aimed at healthy living.
"The advertising and sponsorship budgets of the junk food and tobacco manufacturers vastly outweighs the amount that the government can spend on campaigns that provide information and promote healthy lifestyles," said Mr. Black. "While we in Wales are spending more on promoting more healthy lifestyles, this positive message is easily swamped by the huge budgets that these companies can deploy. That is why such action is needed."
"The Labour Assembly Government must both beef up the amount it spends educating us on how to get and remain healthy, and it must curb the excesses of these advertisers - particularly those who target their products upon children and young people. The Chief Medical Officer for England, Sir Liam Donaldson has warned that English life expectancy will fall as a consequence of the diversion of money away from public health. Parts of Wales suffer from some of the poorest health in Europe. We have to take action to address that, especially amongst young people."
