The Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member for South Wales West, Peter Black, has called on the Government to schedule a debate at the earliest moment on the 'flawed' proposals to move neurosurgery from Swansea to Cardiff.
Speaking in the Assembly Chamber today, Mr. Black described the proposals as deeply flawed. He said that if they are accepted then there will be a major impact on existing services in Morriston Hospital. He also claimed that the failure to consider the presence of the existing unit in Bristol in drawing up the recommendations had favoured Cardiff.
"It is clear to me that these recommendations have been weighted in favour of the capital City," said Mr. Black. "The document is so defective in failing to account for Bristol, in ignoring the impact of this change on Morriston Hospital and in its omissions in the assessment of available services in Swansea that it should be withdrawn."
"It is vital that Assembly Members have an opportunity to debate this issue at the earliest possible moment. If the Labour Assembly Government allow the consultation process to continue unchecked without that debate and without putting right the distorted basis of these recommendations then they could be a party to the loss of a major service from Swansea."
