Peter Black at one of the two Swansea Hospitals
The Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member for South Wales West, Peter Black, has called on the Swansea Local Health Board to overrule its own Chief Executive and join with the NHS Trust in opposing plans to transfer neurosurgery to Cardiff.
Mr. Black was speaking after it was revealed that the Swansea LHB Chief Executive, Sue Heatherington used her vote on Health Commission Wales to support the recommendation that Cardiff should be the preferred location of the new unit.
"It is very disturbing that somebody who has been appointed to look after the best interests of the health service in Swansea, has chosen to support a proposition that could well undermine key services in Morriston Hospital", said Mr. Black. "It makes no sense whatsoever to have two neurosurgery units within 40 miles of each other whilst the whole of West Wales has no easy access to one at all. The fact that the so-called experts who made this recommendation were told to ignore Bristol in their calculations invalidates their conclusions in my view."
"The Swansea Local Health Board must overrule their Chief Executive on this issue. They should take into account the impact that moving this unit will have on the provision of orthopaedics, cardiac care and burns at Morriston. They should also take into account the assessment by other experts that the project board's conclusions misrepresent the services available in Morriston and that as a consequence their comparative scoring is seriously flawed. The whole of West Wales should unite to fight this injustice and we should be able to expect the Local Health Board to fall into line."
