Welsh Ministers should intervene to try and save Swansea factory

2010 Gorffenaf 7 12:00 AM

The Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member for South Wales West, Peter Black has called on the Economic Development Minister to intervene on talks over the future of the Linamar car components plant near Swansea, which Unions believe is on the verge of closure, with the loss of 200 jobs.

Unite believe that the Linamar factory will close by the end of the year with work transferred to sites overseas. They are demanding "urgent talks" with the company in an attempt to explore ways to keep the plant open and save jobs. However, Mr. Black says that Ministers have a role in this too, especially as there may well be outstanding government grants to be accounted for.

"If this factory closes it will be a further blow to the manufacturing base in the Swansea bay area," said Mr. Black. "We should be doing everything possible to ensure that this does not happen. I will be writing to the Minister to ask him to intervene in this process and offer every support he can to try and keep this factory open.

"In particular I will be seeking information on any grants given to the factory and what conditions apply in terms of repayment if they cease trading. That information may offer some leverage for the Minister to secure a more favourable result. In talks."
