Peter Black AM, Welsh Liberal Democrat Communities spokesperson today supported the call by the Local Government Association for more powers for local councils to offer troubled small business' payment breaks.
Currently business rate relief is available under various categories to businesses who claim it. The Local Government Association carried out surveys on 48 councils during August and September 2008, and over half of the councils questioned said that the claims made by small businesses for business rate relief had fallen..
Mr. Black, a Councillor himself stated, "In this global economic crisis if the government won't respond to the needs of small business, it falls to local councils to do so."
"There should be more promotion of the rate relief available to small business by their local council, but rate relief itself isn't sufficient to help small businesses in this current climate. The Government should enable councils to take the initiative."
